A Moment With Malcolm

A Moment With Malcolm

In my painting I sought to capture the essence of Malcolm Turnbull’s personality rather than his perceived persona. Turnbull is a renowned Australian personality, widely recognisable and respectable yet the sittings I had with Malcolm were not with a businessman or a politician but rather with a real person. An everyday Australian. Malcolm’s rolled up sleeves and open-necked shirt are indicative of his hands-on, approachable character. I sought to convey this trait by drawing the viewers eye to his heavy –set hands. Turnbull’s political strength is derived from his dexterity rather than a headline-seeking tongue and his reclining pose hints at the self-confidence in this hands-on approach. His rise in politics has been the result of an ability to sit and listen, giving of his time in a relaxed, unassuming manner, combined with his appreciation of the precious nature of time as he remains ever ready to push on and tackle his next challenge. Even as he leans back, indulging the artist, his left hand, conscious of the watch he sports, is ready to launch him towards his next endeavour. I believe that this characteristic above all else that ensures a Moment with Malcolm is all that is required.
